Everards County League Division Six

Melton won by 37 runs

ON a damp wicket winning the toss against Kirby Muxloe, the runaway league leaders, was always going to be a pivotal moment. Unfortunately Kirby won the toss and without hesitation put Melton in to bat. Conditions were not easy early on and Melton soon found themselves 18-2 off six overs.

Paul Stevenson and Mark Mabbott began to build Melton’s innings. Stevenson played a key anchor role, scoring an excellent 57 in very difficult conditions and he was supported by the mid and lower order as Melton finished on a very creditable 211-9.

Kirby’s experienced openers Warren and Davis initially looked comfortable before Freer claimed two wickets and Redwood one to give Melton the initiative. Kirby’s fourth wicket pair built a useful half-century partnership, but the constaining pressure of bowlers Smith and Stevenson put Melton into a dominant position.

Both Darren Smith and Paul Stevenson finished their excellent spells with two wickets apiece and left Kirby hanging on for a draw. The re-introduction of Redwood immediately paid dividends as further wickets fell as the match was drawing to a close.

Melton had a couple of strong appeals turned down and the game appeared to be heading for a draw, but two balls from the end of the match Ben Redwood claimed his fourth wicket in an excellent spell to bowl Kirby out for 169.

After last week’s disappointing defeat to Cosby, Melton gave a significant response, and for large parts outplayed the team who will soon be crowned league champions. An excellent all-round team performance, played in great spirit where Paul Stevenson was man-of-the-match for excelling first with bat and then ball.
