Melton aiming to maintain their upward momentum
Melton Mowbray Cricket Club will be looking forward to another good season after their promotion to Division Five.
Under new captain and all-rounder Lee Freer, Melton’s First XI have four new additions with the experience of Karl Tew and Pete Humphries along with younger players Lewis Humphries and Lewis Dann.
Melton Seconds, who play in Division Eight, will this season be captained by Malcolm Brown and will also be looking to build on their mid-table finish from the last campaign.
In addition to the two Everards League teams, Melton are also involved in the Grantham and Melton Association on Sundays under Brown’s captaincy, and the Burrough League with Lewis Marsh again the skipper after last season’s promotion to Division One.
Winter nets at the Vet Camp have been well attended by both senior and junior players and Melton are pleased to have entered two junior teams (under 10s and 11s) into the Leicestershire Youth League.
It is the first time for several years Melton have been able to provide junior cricket following their very successful Belvoir Bees Wednesday evening coaching sessions over the last two summers.
Off the field at the All England Ground, things are also strong with a hard-working committee and bar staff. The clubhouse is regularly used for darts, pool and functions, and grants are being sought for further improvements to the playing facilities including covers, fixed practice nets and an artificial wicket.
The club still welcomes new players to their Saxby Road headquarters. If interested, contact club secretary Bob Hendy on (01664) 561726.
