Melton lose their way in the gloom

Everards County League Division Five

NARBOROUGH AND LITTLETHORPE SECOND XI v MELTON TOWN FIRST XI

Narborough won by 6 wkts

AFTER last season’s promotion, Melton began the new campaign full of optimism against tough opponents who finished third last season.

Melton lost the toss and batted in tough conditions for batting with a slow green track and very wet outfield. Melton were struggling at 34-4 after 14 overs when Simon Brown joined Lee Freer.

They began to build the foundations to a reasonable innings, adding 99 runs from 16 overs before Brown was out for an excellent 36.

Redwood soon followed and Freer was eventually bowled for an impressive 65, an innings including four sixes. Melton’s tail took the score to 172 as the outfield began to dry.

Opening attack bowlers Redwood and Tew were soon causing problems for the openers with Tew moving the ball significantly, while Redwood generated good pace. Two strong appeals were turned down before Tew bowled both openers in quick succession and Redwood took the third Narborough wicket with the score on 36.

Tew and Redwood continued to trouble the hosts, but in increasingly windy conditions the outfield began to dry and the batsmen played with more confidence. Melton switched bowlers with Narborough still needing to score at six-an-over.

As the game moved into its final phase the dark clouds left fielders struggling to sight the ball and the fielding became ragged. Worse was to come when Freer attempted a running catch in the deep and finished with a split hand which required hospital treatment.

Melton struggled with 10 men, but were lifted by Redwood’s return which saw Broderick out for a fine 52. Narborough reached their target in the final over amid the gloom at 8.20pm with Jones unbeaten on 54.
