Gracedieu winning draw

HAVING won the toss, Melton asked Gracedieu to bat on what looked a helpful wicket for bowlers.

Lee Jones and Darren Smith opened the bowling attack and immediately caused problems for the batsman. With runs hard to come by, Melton soon started to take wickets with Smith in particular causing plenty of headaches.

With the score on 60, Gracedieu were five wickets down, four of them falling to Smith.

But young batsman Chadwick built a useful innings and the run rate began to quicken. Chadwick went on to score an excellent 82 not out as Gracedieu posted a challenging total of 195-6.

Melton made a poor start to their reply, losing their first five wickets for only 48 runs.

James Culy and Mick Whitfield finally started to build a decent reply and took the score to 101 before Culy was out. Whitfield continued his recent run of good form and was eventually out for an excellent 47 after some fine shots.

Melton’s tail showed lots of resilience and in the end last wicket pair Darren Smith and Alan Dawson continued to frustrate the home side as the visitors closed on 148 for 9 wkts.

Gracedieu: 196-6.

Bowling: L Jones 18-4-65-1, D Smith 17-4-47-4, J Rawlings 5-0-35-0, M Whitfield 5-0-35-1.
