MATCH REPORT: Sunday XI away to Grantham Cricket Club

Grantham & Melton League Division 3

Melton away to Grantham Cricket Club

Melton won by 5 runs

Melton travelled to Grantham for this Division three match up. A warm day and superb facilities saw Grantham win the toss and elect to bowl.
On a good looking track Melton’s opening pair of Jamie Culy (14) and Owen Lloyd (31) both looked comfortable striking the ball but a mistimed square-cut to point by Culy stopped the partnership at 30. Owen Lloyd was joined at the crease by Matt Worsnop and the pace of runs continued to flow and the 50 came up in the 11th over. Including 4 fours and 4 sixes Matt brought up his 50 in just 28 balls and Melton reached 100 mark in the 15th over. Owen was finally bowled for 31 after compiling a 73 run partnership. In came Marcus Hurrell (27) and the run flow again continued with the pair working the ball well into the spaces and keen running between the wickets. They crashing 7 boundaries for another strong partnership of 83. Worsnop continued to work the ball well but was eventually out on 94 (8 fours and 4 sixes) that underpinned the Melton innings. With Hurrell out too within an over the runs finally dried up and the wickets started to fall. Boundaries from S.Handley and Scott Mooney helped the score along and Melton finished on 211 all out in the 35th over.
After tea Melton took to the field to defend their score and found some stalwart resistance from the opening Grantham batsmen. The bowling from Worsnop and Mooney was fiery and at a good pace but the wickets were illusive.
The ball found it’s way through to the keeper on countless occasions but no edges were found but the run rate was low. A first change of bowling saw Jamie Culy and Peter Hood enter the attack but although the ball was in the air it found open spaces on many occasions. After another bowling change back on came Scott Mooney who forced a mistimed shot from opener A.Shaw (59) which was taken by keeper Owen Lloyd with the score on 122.
Grantham forged another partnership  worth 54 but a change of end for Marcus Hurrell bred another wicket with the score on 176. With just a few overs to go Grantham were creeping towards their target but some tight bowling at the end from Mooney, Hurrell and Worsnop slowed down the chase. Matt Worsnop took his well earned wicket with the score on 191 and the final over saw Grantham needing 14. Wornsop continued with good pace from a shortened run up and Melton finished on top on this close and exciting encounter.

Melton – 211 all out

Grantham – 206 for 5
