MATCH REPORT FOR 2nd XI

Melton 2nd XI home to Countesthopre 3’s

Saturday 10th May 2014

Early groundwork made it possible for this Division 7 game to get underway on time but with many stoppages in play due to downpours it often looked like the weather would win. Only 5 first innings overs were lost and amazing the game was played to a result. Countesthorpe won the toss and sent Melton in to bat. Countesthorpe started well taking an early wicket and holding the run rate to 1 per over from the first seven. The second wicket went in the 15th over with just 21 runs on the board and the visitors had the upper hand. In at No. 3 was wicket keeper Johnny Wydra (52) who made a slow start but when joined by Lewis Marsh (30) the runs started to come. Hitting 9 fours between them, the pair forged a 57 run partnership that was the backbone of the Melton Innings. Wydra went on to form another partnership of 45 with Steve Booth (27) as Melton finished on 148 for 8 from 40 overs.

Pick of the Countesthorpe bowlers was N.Watson 11overs 5 maidens, 2 for 18.

Countesthope’s response never really got off the ground as tight bowling from Jim Eccles (2 for 25) and Lee Jones (1 for 21) from the first 24 overs gave the visitors too much to do in the 2nd half of their innings. With rain hampering most of the afternoon only D.Anthony (32) gave any resistance as Lewis Marsh and Darren Smith finished off the shortened Countesthorpe lineup for just 64 runs give Melton a well needed 30 point boost up the table.
