MATCH REPORT FOR 2nd XI

Melton 2nd XI Away to Dunton Bassett 2nds

Saturday 19th April 2014

On the opening day of the season in the new Leicestershire & Rutland Cricket League Melton 2nds travelled away to Dunton Bassett. A cool, dry and overcast day saw Dunton win the toss and elect to bat.

Jim Eccles and Lee Jones opened the bowling and kept the batsmen in check for the first 10 overs, only yielding 33 runs but without any wickets down the batsmen settled and runs started to flow. The first wicket did eventually fall, P.Dixon bowled by Steve Booth for 77 with the score at 120 in the 25th over.

Chances did come but Melton didn’t take advantage of their catches and the second wicket didn’t come until the score hit 200 in the 39th over where Whitfield took a catch at deep mid on. A couple of late wickets created by the field. Johnny Wydra with some good work behind the stumps and run out from Steve Booth but a tough chase of 243 was set. A Pickering finished on 96 not out.

AFTER TEA

Melton’s opening pair of Owen Lloyd and Brian Draper got off to a lightning start at nearly 7 runs an over and neither looked in any trouble but a run out in the 9th over saw Lloyd (23) heading back to the pavillion. The wicket and a fresh pair of bowlers, who both bowled slow right arm over brought the run rate crashing down to 1 run per over. Draper continued to dig in for his 36 and some late on dynamic batting from Johnny Wydra (35), Steve Booth (40 not out) and Mick Whitfield (19 not out) all came a little too late and Melton Finished 43 runs short.
