Wonersh Cricket Club started their mid summer tour of Leicestershire at Melton Mowbray Cricket Club on Friday before heading to Houghton on the Hill on Saturday and completing the tour on Sunday 31st July at Woodhouse Eaves.
The touring side emerged from their minibus with loud green t-shirts printed for the tour and either specially grown moustaches or large stick on moustaches and a collection of good spirits.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a warm and muggy Friday and proceeded to amass a 256 run opening partnership for the first wicket, R.Miller hitting 156 and never really looking in much trouble. When the opening pair departed a couple of wickets did fall but the visitors ended on 286 from their 40 overs.
Mark Mabbott was the pick of the bowlers at 3 for 25 from his 8 overs but everyone was impressed with guest player Jamie Picker whose left arm medium paced seam bowling should have been rewarded with wickets.
Melton’s mixed side seemed a little impatient to get to the total, or the bar and wickets fell frequently to a varied bowling line up. Jamie Picker continued to impress with a well tailored 33 but he was only backed up by some hard hitting strikes from Martin Brightwell and Mark Wells who chipped in with 16 and 15 respectively as Melton were bowled out for 120.
