MELTON MOWBRAY v LOUGHBOROUGH GREENFIELDS
Melton winning draw
Matchball sponsor: Twinlakes
MELTON were full of confidence going into Saturday’s fixture, but after a morning of poor weather they were fortunate to get a full match.
The hosts lost the toss and batted, but started brightly with Potter and Stephenson striking the ball with impeccable timing until the latter cut the ball straight to backward point. Lewis Humphreys came in for his home debut since joining from Thorpe Arnold and started conservatively. Potter edged behind which brought in the in-form Lee Freer.
Both batsmen settled and found the bowling easier to score freely from, picking up on anything short or too full. The biggest six came from Freer into the houses.
He was first to bring up his 50 with Humphreys following several overs later. Melton kept piling on the runs at around eight per over, forcing Loughborough to regularly change their bowling.
Freer completed his and Melton’s first century of the season, while Humphreys finally fell on 80 after a partnership of 204, Melton’s biggest for some seasons.
Harris and home debutant Peter Humphreys came to the crease when Freer finally fell on 110 and added 40 more runs, helping Melton to a destructive total of 272-4 from 45 overs.
After tea, Melton knew that only an all-round team effort would ensure victory. Tew broke the opening stand early on and Redwood supported him with very tight lines without reward.
Tew claimed two more wickets to finish with 3 for 62, but Redwood’s figures of 1 for 49 didn’t reflect how well he bowled. The pick of the bowlers was Garry Potter with sublime pace and control on a slow wicket, taking 3 for 34.
On a very frustrating day in the field, the ball went either side of the fielder on the ground or in the air. Loughborough hung on to close at 227-8, but nonetheless an impressive performance which leaves Melton third.
